Sometimes, the hardest question is the one that sounds perfectly simple.
There’s one situation almost everyone in Rijeka will recognize.
It’s Saturday. Or Sunday. Maybe even an ordinary Tuesday after work. You’re hungry, but no one feels like cooking.
Then someone says those familiar words:
“Let’s grab something to eat.”
Everyone immediately nods.
And then there’s silence.
Not because there’s nowhere to eat in Rijeka. Quite the opposite. There are more options today than ever before.
The silence comes because everyone has a different idea in mind.
One person wants pizza.
Another wants a burger.
Someone else is in the mood for something from the grill.
Someone wants a lighter meal, perhaps a salad or a wok dish. The kids are already asking whether they have fries and pancakes. Someone else just wants to sit on a terrace, order a cocktail, and finally let the weekend begin.
And before you’ve even left, the debate has already started.
“There’s nothing for me there.”
“I don’t feel like going into the city centre. We’ll just end up looking for parking again.”
“And where are we supposed to go if there are eight of us?”
How many times have you found yourself having that exact conversation?
When choice becomes a problem
It’s interesting how, these days, we’re no longer simply looking for a place to eat.
We’re looking for a place everyone can agree on.
That may sound like a small thing, but it’s exactly why the same conversation happens week after week.
It used to be enough for someone to say, “Let’s go for pizza.”
Not anymore.
Every group is different. Someone is watching what they eat. Someone loves a good burger. One person will always order a meat platter, while someone else at the table is looking for a vegetarian meal. The kids have their preferences, the adults have theirs, and everyone wants the food to be good, the portions generous, and the atmosphere relaxed.
When you put all of that together, you realise you’re not just looking for somewhere to have lunch or dinner.
You’re looking for a place that won’t disappoint anyone.
Rijeka has another problem. And we all know what it is.
Let’s be honest.
How many times have you given up on an idea simply because you couldn’t be bothered to think about where to park?
The food wasn’t the problem.
The problem was everything that came before sitting down at the table.
The traffic.
Looking for a parking space.
“There’s no way we’re going to find a spot here.”
If you’re coming with children, it matters even more. If there’s a larger group of you, even more so. And if you’re coming after work and simply want to sit down, order, and relax, it can often be the deciding factor.
That’s why it’s no coincidence that more and more people choose places that are easy to get to.
Not because they’re lazy.
But because they want their outing to begin the moment they get into the car, not twenty minutes later.
And what if you’re coming by bus?
That matters too.
Not everyone is driving.
Some people are coming from the city centre, some from Trsat, some from Pećine, and others from Kostrena. When you know that several bus routes can get you there, making plans becomes much easier.
No one has to worry about how they’ll get there or where they’ll park.
Things like that rarely make it into photos on social media.
But they’re exactly why people keep choosing the same place time and time again.
What Actually Makes a Good Place to Eat?
When you think about it, the answer has very little to do with trends.
It doesn’t really matter whether a place has the “best burger” or the “best pizza”.
Because what if the person next to you doesn’t want either?
Perhaps the real question is something else entirely.
Can everyone in the group open the menu and, without overthinking it, find something they’ll enjoy within the first few minutes?
If the answer is yes, then you’ve found much more than just a place to eat.
You’ve found a place you’ll come back to.
Honestly? For years, I had completely the wrong impression too.
Whenever someone mentioned Kooglana Food&Fun, the first thing that came to mind was bowling.
I assumed it was a place where you grabbed a quick bite between two games, had a drink, and then moved on.
And I wasn’t the only one.
I think many people in Rijeka still have the same impression.
It was only when I happened to sit down at a table one day and open the menu that I realised just how incomplete that impression really was.
From that moment on, I stopped thinking of it as a place you visit only for entertainment.
I began to see it as a place you choose because you know everyone at the table will find something they enjoy.
And believe me, these days, that matters more than ever.
